Day 1 - Endless Travel

August 16 and 17

Nothing terribly exciting happened this day.... we got to Dulles (thanks for the ride, Megan!) to find a small amount of chaos at check-in. The last time we left the country (for our honeymoon to NZ), we didn't get caught in the evening crush of all the flights to Europe so we were a bit surprised by the number of people.

We hadn't booked our flights on United together because I was using USAir miles and Will used United miles. This presented a problem getting seats together and in getting all of my boarding passes. Checking bags proved to be a bit of an ordeal because the conveyor belt wasn't working and we had to walk our bags all over the place. Because Will is currently a premier United flyer, we got through security in our own line and I was able to be upgraded to Economy Plus - go Will! They still wouldn't give me all of my boarding passes - some nonsense about USAir systems not communicating with United's.

We landed in Heathrow before 6am which turns out is before the airport is open. And, thus, we began our day of walking on the tarmac. Flight number 2 was to Vienna - more tarmac. Flight 3 was a propjet (I seriously hate propellers on planes) to Podgorica, Montenegro that they didn't even bother to put up on the board. My first Hermés Birkin sighting ever in real life and the first of the trip was on the shuttle bus to the plane.

We finally arrived in Podgo around 4 in the afternoon. The airport there is very small. There wasn't a single jetway, only 2 baggage carousels, 1 passport worker, and 1 customs officer. We had one of our 2 bags (thankfully the one with all the clothes). Our welcoming party included Tim, Liz, and Liz's dad, henceforth to be referred to as Joe G. There was no Alamo Rental in the airport so no car for us. Tim sent Liz, Joe G and I back to the apartment while they got the bag figured out. Lexi had very wisely decided that we would just hang out at home for the evening. We enjoyed an array of local cheeses and what might be the most amazing salami-like meat. Lexi made a lovely dinner into which I nearly fell asleep.... it was a LONG day.

  1. Yes, but the propjet had its wings above the windows, so I actually had a view! Refreshing.
